Falcons look to improve on 22-17 season

Most of the roster from a solid 22-17 2009 baseball season is intact, but pitching depth is still the question mark as CUW hopes to make a NAC statement in 2010.

Offensively the Falcons, who batted .342 as a team, appear to be formidable once again. Outfielder Jon Olla (Kewaskum), who led the Nation in on base percentage (.602) and hit a robust .489 with 48 RBI's, will be the offensive anchor.

Olla has lots of help surrounding him in the Falcon batting order. Sophomore third baseman Dan Shea (Campbellsport) hit .329 and led the team with 55 RBI's. Junior Matt Schilter (West Bend West) hit .358 and drove in 43 runs.

Junior outfielder Matt Mayer (West Bend West) hit .306 with 24 runs batted in and platooning first baseman Derrick Pankow (.250) are also back as is outfielder Nick Doedens (Germantown) who hit an impressive .329 in 76 plate appearances.

On the mound junior Derrick Pankow (6-0) emerged as the Concordia stopper last season. The Hartford native had a respectable 4.62 ERA and his 3-1 strikeout to walk ratio was excellent.

After Pankow, however, the rotation has lots of question marks.

Last season CUW gave up almost 8 earned runs per game with only graduated reliever Rusty Meyer compiling more than 3 wins.

Senior transfer Greg Perlewitz (Homestead), trying to come back from shoulder surgery is one possibility. Freshman Ryan Schilter (West Bend West) will make his mark as a hurler and hitter according to Head Coach Val Keiper.

Junior lefthanders Cory Stark (Grafton) and Brent Behling (Nashotah) will also be counted on to fill the holes on the mound.
