NAC baseball coaches tab Aurora as 2011 favorite

The Aurora baseball team received seven first-place votes and 131 total points in the 2011 Northern Athletics Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll; picked as the favorite for the conference title this season.

The Spartans (27-16, 16-6 NAC) finished just a game out of first place last season, but rallied to win the NAC tournament and advanced to the NCAA III Championship tournament. Aurora returns a trio of honorable mention all-conference players from a season ago.

Rockford (27-14-1, 17-5), last season's NAC co-champion, was picked second, just ahead of the other co-champ, Edgewood (29-15, 17-5). The Regents picked up 126 points and two first-place votes, while the Eagles were at 115 and one first-place vote.

Tied for fourth place in the poll with 108 points were Concordia Chicago (31-9, 16-6) and Concordia Wisconsin (22-18, 16-6). CUC picked up the remaining two first-place votes.

Benedictine (17-23, 12-10) was sixth with 88 points, Lakeland (21-19, 12-10) seventh with 69 and Marian (12-26, 8-14) eighth with 61 poll points.

Dominican (11-25, 4-18) was ninth with 46 points, while MSOE (12-27, 7-15) and Wisconsin Lutheran (11-26, 7-15) tied for the 10th spot with 37 points apiece. Maranatha (4-25, 0-22) rounded out the bottom of the poll with 12 points.

Poll points were compiled on a 12-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis, with the 12 head coaches voting for all 12 teams.

The NAC's automatic qualifier for the 2011 NCAA III Championship is determined by the four-team conference tournament held May 13-16 at Road Ranger Stadium in Loves Park, Ill., just outside of Rockford.
