10-9 win gets CUW baseball into playoffs

West Bend

Concordia (13-8) edged Marian 10-9 in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, while Edgewood was dropping a pair of games at Lakeland.

That combination of results assured CUW a spot in the 4 team NAC NCAA qualifying tournament. Marian led 3-0 before Concordia came up with a 5 run second to take the lead. CUW collected 7 hits in that inning with Greg Rhude's two run double and a 2 run single by Daniel Mueller being key blows.

Val Keiper's team got single tallies in five subsequent innings but had to survive a Sabre rally in the ninth that produced two runs and had two more in scoring position when Derrick Pankow made an over the shoulder catch while racing toward the left field wall for the game's final out.

Matt Schilter, Mueller, Ryan Schilter, Dan Shea, Adam Martz, David Enters, and Rhude each had a pair of CUW's 15 hits.

Matt Parrent (4-1) got credit for the important win via 6 2/3 innings of work.
