Adam Martz' seventh inning double drove in what proved to be the game-winner as Concordia (14-8) defeated Marian University 6-5 in the second game of Saturday's twin bill.
Concordia trailed 3-0 heading into the bottom of the 5th but came up with 4 big runs. Mark Schonenberg and David Enters led off the fifth with singles before Matt Schilter walked with one out to load the bases. Daniel Mueller drove home the first CUW run with a sacrifice fly and hits by Ryan Schilter, Nick Doedens, and Dan Shea brought home the next three.
Martz' double later broke a 6-6 tie in the 7th and CUW held on behind sterling relief by freshman Austin Baglow (1-4) who did not allow an earned run in four innings of work.
Left for dead at 8-7 in the conference little more than a week ago, the Falcons won six of their final 7 NAC games to jump past five teams and move into third place in the final league standings.
Saturday's wins were crucial because only 4 of the conference's 12 teams earn berths in the NAC NCAA tournament qualifier.
Only Concordia- Chicago (20-2) and Aurora (19-3) finished ahead of CUW. Benedictine (13-9) will be the 4th team in the prestigious field with double elimination play beginning next Friday in Rockford, Illinois. Rockford (12-10) and Edgewood (12-10) both dropped twin bills Saturday to drop out of the elite group.
