Falcon baseball season ends in tourney play
After dropping a 16 inning marathon to Aurora, the Falcons came back just hours later to play #1 CU-Chicago tough to the final out before dropping a 9-6 decision. The loss eliminated CUW from NAC Tournament (Final Four) competition.
Val Keiper's team did not go down without a fight. Trailing 7-0 heading into the bottom of the second, CUW got on the board when Adam Martz homered to right.
The Falcons got another run back via hits by Daniel Mueller and
Ryan Schilter in the 4th.
After the Cougars tacked on a pair of fifth inning scores to
make it 9-2, CUW got a home run from Greg Rhude in the their half
of the 5th and 3 scores in the sixth. Harry Steldt's double drove
home two of the sixth inning runs to make it a 9-6 deficit.
Freshman Zach Wilson was outstanding in relief for CUW, pitching
3 1/3 scoreless innings against the potent Cougars who are 33-9
heading into Sunday's championship game.
CUW, 18-23 overall, left the bases loaded that inning and also
had multiple runners on base in the 7th, 8th, and 9th but could not
get the big hit.
