Baseball ends season at home on Senior Day

MEQUON, Wis. – Concordia University Wisconsin dropped an 11-8 non-conference baseball contest against UW-Whitewater at Kapco Park on Tuesday afternoon to conclude the 2012 campaign.

CUW (13-24) scored at least one run in six different innings during SENIOR DAY and outhit UW-W 15-11 in the contest, but four costly errors didn't help in the end. The Warhawks plated nine runs during the second and third innings to take a commanding lead, one that was too large to overcome for the Falcons.

The Falcons' 2012 senior class had eight members and they all saw action in the game. Seniors Austin Sarauer(Campbellsport, Wis.) and Adam Martz (West Bend, Wis.) each had three hits and scored a combined five runs.

Sophomore Harry Steldt (West Bend, Wis.) led all players with a game-high four base hits, while driving in two and scoring once. Sophomore Andrew Mueller (Horicon, Wis.) was given the loss after giving up five hits and allowing nine runs, four earned.

A trio of UW-W (27-13) players recorded two hits and Brandon Egnarski scored a team-best three times. Aaron Leitner (3-2) earned the win on the mound in relief after throwing two innings. He struck out two, allowed four hits and gave up two runs, one earned.

CUW lit up the scoreboard first with back-to-back home runs by Sarauer and Steldt in the opening frame. It was the first time in Kapco Park history that back-to-back home runs were hit.

UW-W answered with four runs in the second and five in the fifth to take a 9-2 lead. The Warhawks benefited from two hit-by-pitches, three errors and two walks by the Falcons. They also recorded three singles, a double and a stolen base in the two frames.

Junior Daniel Mueller (West Bend, Wis.) drove in his only run of the game on a single to right field, which scored Sarauer from third to make the score 9-3 after three innings of play.

CUW scored a run in each of the next three innings while UW-W plated a run in the fifth off a double to hold a 10-6 advantage at the end of six frames.

The Warhawks pushed their advantage to 11-6 after Mike Mierow ripped a RBI double down the left field line.

CUW scored its final runs of the ballgame on a Martz double to right field scoring pinch runner Austin Baglow(sophomore, Walled Lake, Mich.), before Martz later scored on a wild pitch.
