Martz hits three-run homer, Baseball drops non-conference game

Box Score: CC 12, CUW 7

KENOSHA, Wis. -
Adam Martz crushed a three-run home run, but it wasn't enough as Concordia University Wisconsin dropped a 12-7 non-conference game at Carthage College. The Red Men scored in six different innings and recovered from a 7-3 deficit in the third frame.

CUW scored all seven of its runs in the top of the third, all with no outs recorded. The Falcons hit three doubles in the frame and were highlighted by Martz's first long ball of the season.

CC was outhit and left 11 runners on base, but capitalized on eight walks that directly led to a pair of runs and four CUW errors. Jon Kleinmeyer controlled the mound for the Red Men, throwing seven innings and striking out five in relief.

Senior Austin Sarauer (Campbellsport, Wis.) led the Falcons with a 4-for-5 performance, while Martz (senior, West Bend, Wis.) and junior Daniel Mueller (West Bend, Wis.) each finished with two hits. In all, seven different players crossed the plate. Freshman Michael Winter (Cedarburg, Wis.) (1-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up two earned runs in 0.2 innings of work.

Joey Aiello recorded three hits and two RBI to lead CC (9-11). Drew Bailey and Tyler Eickmeyer each concluded the win with two hits, two runs scored and two RBI. Kleinmeyer (1-1) earned the victory on the mound.

CC found the scoreboard first with a trio of runs two innings into the ballgame. A bases loaded walk scored the first run prior to a RBI fielder's choice and a groundout which gave the Red Men a 3-0 lead.

CUW (8-11) responded by batting around the order and plated seven runs in an inning for the second time this season. The Falcons connected with the Red Men pitchers for three doubles, three singles and Martz's homer, and were aided by just one error.

CC answered with a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings before scoring three in the sixth frame to take control, 11-7. The Red Men tacked on an insurance run in the seventh.

The Falcons return to Northern Athletics Conference play on Saturday with a doubleheader at Maranatha Baptist Bible College starting at 12 p.m. They then host Lakeland College in a doubleheader on Sunday at Kapco Park starting at 1 p.m.
