Falcon mentor looks to veteran leadership

CUW looks to improve on a 13-13 2008-9 season behind a host of veterans with established credentials- plus a talented band of newcomers. A total of 15 returnees and 14 new candidates began October workouts and 10 of those athletes have started at least one game in their Concordia careers.

Forward Edward Newton-Kemp (17.0 pts. and 5.5 rebounds) is a returning 1st team all conference performer and guard Mitchell Schneider (6.2 ppg) earned NAC all freshman team honors last season. Newton-Kemp has missed significant practice time to date- first with a leg injury and then with a scratched cornea.

Senior post player Kyle Barth (9.6 ppg) and veteran guard John Ulrich (6.9ppg) started most of CUW's 2008-9 games while Cory Stark, Tyler Granrath, Matt Paluchniak, Zach Neumann and Nick Doedens logged considerable minutes. Ulrich has looked "quicker and stronger" in early workouts according to head coach Shawn Cassidy.

Cassidy (27-24 in two seasons at the helm) hopes the experienced nucleus can improve Falcon fortunes so that this squad will be "in the NAC mix" heading into February. "We have lots of lineup options and depth should be a real positive for us," said Cassidy.
