Men's Soccer shuts out Sabres for convincing NACC win
MEQUON, Wis. – A foggy Fitting Field could not slow down the Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Soccer team Tuesday afternoon. Marian University also had a tough time slowing down the Falcons as they picked up a 4-0 win over the Sabres in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference action.
Freshmen Jordan Moehn (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and Nicolas Bocanegra (Grafton, Wis.) and sophomore Bobby Russ (Wauwatosa, Wis.) all recorded goals, while CUW also scored an own goal off a Sabres defender. The Falcons were dominant in outshooting MU 20-5, including putting 13 of those 20 shots on goal.
Moehn got the scoring started 26:59 into play when he fired a shot from over 20 yards out on the left side, sailing it perfectly into the top right corner of the goal. Sophomore David Kulberg (Osseo, Minn.) was credited with an assist on the opening goal. The lead would reach 2-0 before halftime as Bocanegra scored off a free kick from 18 yards out. Senior Jacob Pope (Muskego, Wis.) faked a free kick attempt and Bocanegra followed up with a perfectly placed shot to give CUW the two-goal halftime lead.
The Falcons scored 6:49 into the second half when junior Diego Campos (Milwaukee, Wis.) sent a shot towards the net and the ball hit off a Marian defender and into the goal. An own goal was the official ruling on the play. CUW then made the score 4-0 on a goal form Russ at the 78:27 mark. Russ took a pass from sophomore Ryan Carey (Appleton, Wis.) and beat the goalie to give CUW the four-goal edge.
Sophomore Alec Brew (Appleton, Wis.) picked up his first career collegiate victory and first career shutout as he recorded three saves. Jameson Hoerter made nine saves for the Sabres.
The Falcons sent plenty of shots Hoerter's way as sophomore Keegan Van Dusseldorp (Burlington, Wis.) led all players with six. Russ added five, while Marian got two shots from David Reinke, both on goal.
CUW (6-6-2, 3-2-1 NACC) will return to the pitch Saturday when they host MSOE in a NACC showdown. The Falcons and Raiders are set for a 1:00 p.m. start at Fitting Field. Live audio and stats will be available from CUWFalcons.com.
