Men's Tennis competes at USTA/ITA Midwest Regional/Open
ST. PETER, Min. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Tennis team opened its 2013-2014 season at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional and Open Tournaments, hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College. The Falcons had two singles players compete in the regional draw and one doubles team, while other competitors took part in the open tournament.
Seniors Russell Johnson (Monticello, Minn.) and Skip Turner (Eau Claire, Wis.) played in the regional singles tournament, which featured some of the top players in the Midwest. Johnson posted a 1-1 record, defeating Jack Hansen of Saint John's University by a 7-6, 6-4 count. Johnson was ousted in the round of 64 by Ryan Jump of Carthage College.
Turner faced off against Tim Kahl of Central College in his opening round matchup and was defeated 6-3, 6-1. The duo of Turner and Johnson also competed in the doubles tournament, falling to Matt and Steven Schull of Bethel University, 8-4.
CUW had several players compete in the Open Singles Championships as well over the course of the weekend. Seniors Tanner Hahn (Reedsburg, Wis.) and Garrett Wells (Aurora, Ill.), juniors Steven Fritz (Berwyn, Ill.), Benjamin Nommensen (Waupaca, Wis.) and Robert Spiering (Wauwatosa, Wis.) and freshmen Trevor Budewitz (Watertown, Wis.) and Jonathan Schotte (Preston, Kan.) all took part in the open.
Nommensen earned a win over Ben Ekstein of Hamline University. The junior won the first set 6-1, but fell in set number two, 2-6. He then won the tiebreaker over Ekstein 10-5 to advance to the second round. Nommensen was the only Falcon to earn a victory in singles play.
CUW had three teams play in the doubles open, as well as Schotte who partnered with Kahlo Vue of St. Norbert College. The Falcons were unable to come up with a win in doubles play.
