LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Tennis team continued its non-conference stretch to begin the season with a pair of matches Saturday. Both matches were hosted by Lake Forest as they Falcons fell to the Foresters, 7-2, before getting swept by Albion College.
The Falcons began the day with a 7-2 setback against Lake Forest. CUW was able to gain wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions but fell in the remaining four singles matches and were swept over doubles play.
Senior Russell Johnson (Monticello, Minn.) improved to 1-0 at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win at No. 1 singles for the Falcons. Senior Skip Turner (Eau Claire, Wis.) followed suit at the No. 2 spot with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win. The remaining singles matches went in favor of LFC, including a thriller at No. 6 singles with Jerry Wang defeating the Falcons Robert Spiering (junior – Wauwatosa, Wis.) in in a tiebreaker.
Lake Forest (1-2) started out the day with a clean sweep in doubles play. The closest of the three doubles matches came at No. 1 where Johnson and Turner were narrowly defeated, 8-6.
The second match of the day saw Albion cruise to a 9-0 victory. The Britons took all singles matches in straight sets, while the closest doubles match came at No. 2. The Falcons duo of junior Benjamin Nommensen (Waupaca, Wis.) and senior Garrett Wells (Aurora, Ill.) battled hard but fell 8-6.
CUW will return to the court next Friday when they host Lawrence University in a non-conference dual match. The Falcons and Vikings will begin at 7 p.m. at the Paley Tennis Center.
