KOHLER, Wis. – The current senior class of the Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Tennis team has never lost a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match. The Falcons made sure that run continued on Wednesday as they rolled past Lakeland College, 8-1, for their 30th consecutive NACC regular season win.
The last time CUW lost in NACC regular season play was May 1, 2010, which happened to come against Lakeland. CUW moved to 3-0 this season with the win and posted 9-0 conference records in each of the past three seasons.
The Falcons started the match against the Muskies with wins in two of three doubles matches. Senior Skip Turner (Eau Claire, Wis.) paired with freshman Trevor Budewitz (Watertown, Wis.) for an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles, while junior Benjamin Nommensen (Waupaca, Wis.) and senior Garrett Wells (Aurora, Ill.) gained a narrow 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles.
Singles play was dominated by the Falcons as they won all six matches in straight sets and did not drop a point in four of those. Senior Russell Johnson (Monticello, Minn.) started that run with a 6-0, 6-0 run at the No. 1 singles position, while Turner followed suit with the exact same match score at No. 2.
Also winning 6-0, 6-0 was juniors Robert Spiering (Wauwatosa, Wis.) and Steven Fritz (Berwyn, Ill.) at the No. 5 and 6 singles spots, respectively. Nommensen and Wells didn't have much trouble in their No. 3 and 4 singles matches either, winning by scores of 6-2, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-3.
CUW (8-10, 3-0 NACC) will look to continue its dominant NACC run April 12 Saturday when they host a pair of league matches. The Falcons will take on Edgewood College at 10 a.m. before facing Marian University at 2 p.m.
