Nobody would have predicted this type of score, but the CU- Chicago Cougars (16-20 overall) pounded 3 Falcon pitchers for 17 hits and sent CUW (30-9) into the loser's bracket of the NAC tourney last evening at Alverno College.
Steve Crook's team has received superb pitching all season, never allowing double digit runs, but Concordia- Chicago took a 3-0 lead in the first two innings and never looked back. It was 6-1 in the bottom of the 4th when CUW starter Danielle Burke (13-3) was replaced, but two Falcon relievers fared no better. Burke had thrown 5 consecutive shutouts, including a brilliant 1-0 performance against this same Cougar team over the weekend.
Falcon shortstop Cara Landherr was 5-5 and Sarah Cochran added 3 hits, but it was the Cougars day as every CU-C starter had at least one hit.
The Falcons play at 3pm today in round two of the double elimination tournament.
