Baumgartner, Holtfreter compete at NCAA Division III Wrestling Championship

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Mason Baumgartner and Pierce Holtfreter had an impressive run to the end of their season, which culminated at the NCAA Division III Championship. The pair both stamped national qualifier on their resume, as they competed Friday afternoon inside the U.S. Cellular Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Baumgartner (junior, Slinger, Wis.) finished with a 2-1 record at the tournament, with his victory coming by 10-8 decision over Devon Carrillo (Wesleyan) in the consolation portion of the 197-pound bracket. He began the day be dropping a 5-0 decision to top-seeded David Welch (Roger Williams). Baumgartner ended his season with a 7-4 decision loss to Michael Swider (Wheaton), who was ranked seventh in the bracket.

Holtfreter (senior, Las Vegas, Nev.) didn't fare so well, dropping both of his bouts in the 157-pound division. He began the morning session with a 12-7 decision loss to Jorge Lopez (Williams), who was the second-seeded wrestler. Holtfreter's career came to an end with an 8-5 decision loss to Grant Parker (Augsburg).

Holtfreter's career record ends at 49-57.

It was the fourth-consecutive season the Falcons have sent at least one wrestler to the NCAA Division III Championship under head coach Corey VanGroll.
