Baumgartner, Mergener end careers at NCAA Championship

LA CROSSE, Wis. – Mason Baumgartner and Mason Mergener added National Qualifier status to their résumé two weeks ago, but didn't plan on ending their careers after two bouts each at the NCAA Division III Championship on Friday.

Baumgartner and Mergener each were seeded in their respective weight brackets and faced difficult opponents in both matches which ended their careers earlier than expected.

Baumgartner (senior, Slinger, Wis.) had a pig-tale match to start his day at 197 pounds against Triston Engle (SUNY Brockport) and got into a bad position before being pinned in 3:49. He then dropped an 11-4 decision to Hunter Ayen (Springfield) to end his career with an overall record of 60-26.

Mergener (senior, Crivitz, Wis.) was the eighth seed at 174 pounds and lost a close 6-3 decision by a tiebreaker to Daren Schurg (Wabash) prior to losing by a 14-8 decision against Mike Maksimovic (Cornell College). He ends his career with a 74-46 overall record.

Both are two-time National Qualifiers. Mergener is tied for the 12th most wins in program history, while Baumgartner is tied for 17th.
