MADISON – The Concordia University Wisconsin Women's Tennis team finished its season with a runner-up finish at the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament, Saturday at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
The Falcons, who were the tournament's three seed, started the day by defeating No. 2 Lakeland College, 5-3. CUW then saw its season end with a finals loss against top-seeded Edgewood College, 5-0.
In the win over the Muskies, the Falcons started with a clean sweep in doubles play, building a 3-0 lead. The highlight of the doubles matches was a No. 1 win by junior Emily McCormick (Waukesha, Wis.) and freshman Elizabeth Carroll (Hartford, Wis.) as they edged out the Muskies top team 9-8 (7-3).
The No. 2 duo of senior Kristine Weber (Rochester Hills, Mich.) and sophomore Ashley Knoll (Wilmot, Wis.) picked up an 8-5 victory, while the No. 3 duo of sophomore Amanda Ropiak (Franklin, Wis.) and freshman Michaela Wagner (Oswego, Ill.) started the doubles wins with an 8-3 decision.
The Falcons then got the two wins they needed in singles play from Carroll and Knoll and No. 3 and 4 singles, respectively. Knoll cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 win, while Carroll closed out the match with a 6-4, 7-5 victory to send the Falcons to the finals.
In the finals matchup Edgewood swept doubles play and then gained wins at No. 1 and 5 singles to close out the Falcons.
CUW concludes its season with a 13-12 record.
