SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – Ashley Jehlicka recorded another triple double to lead Concordia University Wisconsin past Lakeland College on Tuesday night, 3-1 (27-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-15), during Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play inside Woltzen Gymnasium.
The victory was the fourth-consecutive for the Falcons and they have won six of the last eight matches, and it keeps them atop the NACC standings. For Jehlicka, it was her fifth career triple double in 18 matches played during her rookie season.
CUW (14-4, 3-0 NACC) hit .173 for the match and recorded seven service aces, while holding LC to a .097 attack percentage. The match featured 16 scoring ties and eight lead changes, with the Falcons at one point holding the largest lead of the match at 10 points to close the fourth set.
Jehlicka (freshman, Salem, Wis.) finished with 18 kills, 15 assists and 14 digs, to go along with four block assists and a service ace. In all, seven Falcons recorded at least one kill and five ended the victory with double-figure digs.
Senior Carley Valentine (De Pere, Wis.) posted a double-double, with 11 assists and 12 digs, while sophomore Karina Klotz (Hubertus, Wis.) ended with nine assists and nine digs. Senior Erin Howard (Labadie, Mo.) tied for the team lead with 14 digs and senior Britta Duchow (Potter, Wis.) assisted on four blocks.
Jenna Ward paced the Muskies with 17 kills and 10 digs, while Taylor Levitt led all players with 38 assists. Caleigh Galvan led the defensive efforts with 28 digs, while Allison Errthum finished with 18 digs and six kills.
The opening set was the most competitive of the match with eight scoring ties and six lead changes. CUW responded from a four-point deficit to knot the match at 16-16 and slowly pulled ahead to 22-20. However, LC wouldn't go away quietly and had match point at 25-24, but three-straight Falcons' kills earned them a comeback set victory.
Again, the second frame was close as the scoreboard read 20-20 following consecutive Muskie attack errors. Each team traded a pair of points before LC earned a set win with a service ace by Ward to knot the match at a set apiece.
The Falcons built a two-point advantage at 16-14 in the third set and held the lead until three-consecutive kills at the end pushed them in front 2-1. CUW's freshmen standouts Jehlicka, Kaily Moegenburg (Plymouth, Wis.) and Lauren Nevinski (New Berlin, Wis.) concluded the set with back-to-back-to-back kills.
CUW ran away in the fourth and deciding set, leading 20-11 at one point following consecutive service aces by Howard. The lead swelled to a match-best 10 points when Jehlicka smashed the match-winning point.
The Falcons return to play this weekend when they host Concordia University Chicago on Friday at 7 p.m. before Benedictine University enters the R. John Buuck Field House for a 12 p.m. contest on Saturday.
