Women's Cross Country finishes third at Falcon Invitational
MEQUON, Wis. – A trio of freshmen paced the Concordia University Women's Cross Country team at its own Falcon Invitational Saturday. Ashley Scheele, Jennifer Goeman and Elizabeth Frick were the team's top three finishers as the Falcons placed fifth among 19 teams.
CUW was third among Division III schools at the meet and first of six scoring Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference teams. The Falcons totaled 138 points.
Scheele (Kohler, Wis.) was the top finishing Falcon as she crossed the finish line 24:29 in her first collegiate 6K meet. Goeman (Florence, Wis.) was next in line, running a 24:53 followed by Frick (Eagan, Minn.) who came in at 25:42. Rounding out the Falcons scoring lineup was sophomore Jolyn Achs (Gurnee, Ill. – 25:49) and senior Kelsey Wagner (Kenosha, Wis. – 26:05).
Senior Caitlyn Stern (Mequon, Wis.) was the sixth CUW runner to cross the finish line as she ran a 26:21, while freshman Lindsey Fratzke (Winona, Minn.) clocked in at 26:30. Juniors Hannah Erl and Jessica Hennig (Springfield, Ill.) ran PR times of 28:30 and 29:07, respectively.
"Overall, this was a very good start to the season by both the men and women," said Falcons head coach Russ DeLap. "There was some great competition and a big crowd of spectators which made for a lot of energy. I was happy with how we competed and am looking for both teams to improve each week. There were many who ran their personal record and that's great being it is early in the season. We have a lot of work to do but this group is great at working hard and I am confident we will keep getting better.
UW-Milwaukee cruised to the overall team title as they finished with 28 points and were paced by Allison Anich, who ran a course-record time of 21:45. Lawrence was the top finishing Division III school, totaling 113 points and 66 points in the DIII only standings.
CUW will next run at the Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday, September 28. The meet is hosted by the University of Minnesota and is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.
