UW-Whitewater proved that speed does kill by racing past the
Falcons for a 5-0 triumph in the non conference opener for both
teams Tuesday afternoon. The opportunistic Warhawks put just a
dozen shots on goal but finished five of them as their athletic
attackers continually beat CUW to the ball in the attacking
end.
Whitewater got goals from Becky Cera and Emily Gerber in the
first 22 minutes before Concordia became accustomed to the speed of
the match.
From that point on, Ryan Middendorf's team actually controlled
first half action. CUW missed an open net on one occasion, hit
the post on another, and was frustrated by a late defensive clear
after it appeared a shot might have crossed the goal line just
before halftime. The second 40 minutes was all UW- Whitewater.
"Rachel Kleba played well defensively and Lauren Straehler came off
the bench to provide spark", according to Middendorf. "This was as
tough as it gets for an early season test. We played well at times
and should learn some things from playing a team like
UW-Whitewater."
