Marquette, Michigan -
The Concordia softball team got their 2011 season underway on
Saturday, defeating UW-Superior 6-4 from the Finlandia University
Dome Tournament. After both teams rallied from brief deficits, the
Falcons tallied a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning to
pick-up the victory.
Scoreless through three innings, the Falcons took a 1-0 lead in
the top of the fourth inning when Sara Mihalo touched home. The
Yellowjackets rallied to score two in the bottom of the fourth,
before CUW recorded three runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Abbie Goetsch hit a two-run homerun followed by a solo homerun off
the bat of Sarah Cochran, only to see UW-Superior tie the game at
4-4 in the home half of the sixth.
Concordia's bats continued to come alive in their half of the
seventh inning, with Mihalo delivering a two-RBI single. Those two
runs would be more than enough for Ashley Draeger, who came on in
relief of starting pitcher Danielle Burke, to nail down the
save.
UW-Superior outhit the Falcons 9-7, but committed three errors
to the Falcons two. Danielle Burke earned the victory in the circle
after pitching six innings, allowing four runs on nine hits,
striking out four and walking just two.
