CLERMONT, Fla. - On the fifth
and final day of competition at the NTC Spring Games, the Concordia
University Wisconsin softball team split a pair of games, losing
12-4 to Tufts College (Mass.) before defeating Colby College
(Maine) 7-6 on Thursday night.
CUW finished the trip with a 3-7 record in Florida and
the Falcons are 5-9 overall on the season.
In the first game against Tufts, the Falcons got all
four of their runs in the first inning, and took a 4-0 lead into
the third.
But it was all Jumbos after that, as Tufts posted a
seven-run third inning with two in the fifth and three in the
sixth.
At the plate, senior Sheri Weidner (Mount Prospect,
Ill.) knocked in three runs with a bases-clearing double, while
freshman Jessica Liszka (Lindenhurst, Ill.) continued her strong
start to the season by going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
In the second and final game of the trip, against
Colby, the Falcons held a commanding 7-2 lead after five-and-a-half
innings of play, but the Mules made things interesting with one run
in the sixth and three in the seventh to make it a one-run
game.
Sophomore pitcher Jamie Schuh (Freedom, Wis.) would
preserve the victory, however, coming on in relief to get CUW out
of a jam by recording the final two outs.
Offensively, Liszka went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while
sophomore Breanne Geipel (Hartland, Wis.) and freshman Katie
Landherr (Waukesha, Wis.) each went 2-for-3 with two runs and two
RBI apiece. Geipel also blasted a solo home run.
The Falcons now return home after the week in Florida,
and will begin Northern Athletics Conference play on Tuesday when
they host a doubleheader with Maranatha Baptist Bible College. The first game will begin at 3
p.m. CUW finished tied for second in the NAC last season with a
21-3 conference record.
