VERONA, Wis. - Abbie Goetsch and Cara Landherr each
crushed a home run and Concordia University Wisconsin swept
Edgewood College in Northern Athletics Conference softball play at
Ceniti Park on Wednesday afternoon. The Falcons won the first
contest, 9-1, before shutting out the Eagles, 7-0 in the
finale.
CUW pounded out 25 hits in the sweep, including a season-high 15
during the opener, and earned its fourth shutout of the season. In
the circle, Jamie Schuh and Danielle Burke combined to strike out
17 batters and allow just five hits in 14 innings of work.
Landherr and Holly Zinnecker led CUW (15-11, 10-2 NAC) with four
hits apiece, while eight batters recorded at least two hits.
Goetsch drove in five runs, and Landherr finished with seven total
bases and three RBI.
Jessica Spitzer led EC (9-15, 2-8 NAC) with three hits and three
total bases. The Eagles had just three batters record a hit during
the doubleheader.
Game One Recap:
Goetsch hit her third home run of the season and the Falcons plated
six runs in the top of the seventh inning to run away from the
Eagles in game one of the doubleheader, 9-1.
CUW received a complete-game, nine-strikeout performance from Schuh
(sophomore, Freedom, Wis.) and the offense backed her with 15 hits.
The lone Edgewood run was unearned.
Goetsch drove a pitch deep over the left-center field fence and in
the process pushed the winning run across the plate in the fourth
inning. In all, six CUW players finished with multiple hits and
Zinnecker (junior, Roscoe, Ill.) led CUW with three hits, while
Goetsch drove in a game-high four runs.
The Falcons batted around the order in the top of the seventh with
10-consecutive batters reaching base. They recorded eight hits in
the frame and scored six runs.
Spiterz led the Eagles with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate and
drove in the team's only run. Alexis Unser scored EC's lone run
after reaching on a fielder's choice, advancing to second on an
error and reaching third on a wild pitch.
Game Two Recap:
CUW continued its offensive onslaught with 10 hits, and twice
scored three runs in a frame to earn its second-consecutive sweep
of a NAC foe.
Burke (senior, Burlington, Wis.) also threw a complete game and
struck out eight batters in the shutout. She allowed just one hit
after facing 23 batters.
Landherr smashed her third home run of the season, a solo
shot over the center field wall, to lead off the second inning.
The Falcons put together five singles in the fourth to take a 4-0
lead. Landherr, Goetsch and senior Chelsea Strosina (Burlington,
Wis.) each scored in the frame.
CUW plated three insurance runs in the top of the seventh with
senior Sarah Cochran (Bloomington, Wis.) and Landherr each
recording an RBI.

The Falcons return home on Saturday for a NAC doubleheader against
Lakeland College. The first pitch is schedule for 12 p.m. at the
CUW Softball Complex.
