Softball splits on opening day of Florida trip

CLERMONT, Fla. – Concordia University Wisconsin's softball team began its Florida trip by splitting a pair of games Friday afternoon. The Falcons defeated Western Connecticut State University, 9-8, in game one before falling against No. 6 Eastern Connecticut State University, 13-3.

The opening game was a thriller as the Falcons rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to escape with the 9-8 victory. Junior Alyssa Robison (Roselle, Ill.) started the rally with a single and freshman Lexi Wagner (Richfield, Wis.) also singled in the inning. A three-base throwing error by the Colonials allowed both Robison and Wagner to score as CUW earned its first win of the season.

The score was tied 7-7 heading into the seventh but WCSU scored once in the top of the frame to take an 8-7 lead. The Colonials were threating with runners on first and third when the Falcons turned to junior pitcher Jamie Schuh (Freedom, Wis.). Schuh pitched CUW out of a jam, setting up the walk off win in the bottom of the seventh. Wagner went 2-for-2 to pace the Falcon offense.

Game two of the doubleheader was not as good for the Falcons as they took on sixth-ranked Eastern Connecticut State. Three CUW errors and timely hitting by ECSU gave the highly ranked opponent an 13-3 victory.

Schuh took the loss in the circle for the Falcons in game two, while Wagner stayed hot at the plate going 3-for-3 and finishing the day at 5-for-5. Finals statistics for both games have not yet been provided.

CUW will continue its Florida schedule with a pair of games tomorrow beginning with a game against Grove City College at 9 a.m. EDT. The Falcons will then battle UW-Whitewater at 11 a.m.
