STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Jake Reuteler won the 197-pound bracket on Saturday at the UW-Stevens Point Open to lead Concordia University Wisconsin. In addition, Casey Kenealy finished second at 165 pounds, Mason Baumgartner took third in the 197-pound division and Quentin Lueck finished fifth in the 149-pound weight class.
The Falcons had five wrestlers win at least three bouts in their respective weight division at the difficult tournament.
Reuteler (senior, New Berlin, Wis.) won three-consecutive matches to stand atop the 197-pound podium. He defeated Alan Dahlke (UW-Oshkosh) by decision, 9-5, before pinning AJ Hannah (St. John's University) in 5:33 to advance to the title match. Reuteler edged Jordan Koranda (UW-Stevens Point) by decision, 8-6, to take first place.
Kenealy (senior, Hartford, Wis.) picked up three victories and took second place in the 165-pound weight class. He had a win by fall over Levi Petroske (UW-Oshkosh) in 2:39 and a major decision victory, 10-1, over Logan Hermsen (UW-Stevens Point). Kenealy dropped a 4-0 decision in the title match.
Baumgartner (sophmore, Slinger, Wis.) won five matches in the 184-pound division to take third place. He began his day with an easy technical fall victory over Josh Younk (UW-Parkside) before pinning Chris Young (Itasca Community College) in one minute and 26 seconds. Baumgartner then defeated a pair of NCAA Division I wrestlers in Brett Hochstaetter (UW-Madison) by decision, 5-0, and Nic Veling (UW-Madison) by decision, 3-1. He then pinned Cody Nielsen (UW-Stevens Point) in 2:39 to place in third.
Lueck (freshman, Saukville, Wis.) impressed by winning four bouts to take fifth place. He won back-to-back bouts by pin over James Berdan in 4:07 and Owen Feenstra (Wheaton College) in 5:39. Lueck then won a decision over Aaron Heidersheid (UW-Parkside), 6-1, and Stuart Morton (Wheaton College), 6-5, to begin his career on a positive note.
Sophomore Joshua Curcio (Granger, Ind.) won a trio of matches at 141 pounds, including a win by fall over Andrew Perry (St. John's University) in 1:48, which was the fastest of the day for a Falcon.
Junior Pierce Holtfreter (Las Vegas, Nev.) won three bouts at 157 pounds, including a pair by decision. His best match of the day was a 7-0 decision over Tanner Goddard (UW-Stevens Point), 7-0. Holtfreter advanced to the fifth place bout, but lost to take sixth place.
Sophomore Mason Mergener (Crivitz, Wis.) won a trio of matches at 174 pounds, which included a win by fall over Michael Berg (UW-Oshkosh) in 2:57. He also cruised to a 14-5 major decision win over Chris Pajak (Elmhurst College).
CUW returns to action on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. dual against UW-Stevens Point inside the R. John Buuck Field House.
