Softball Splits the Home Opening Series against Platteville

MEQUON, Wis. - Concordia Wisconsin softball opened the home schedule on Saturday with a pair of games against Wisconsin-Platteville.

Wisconsin-Platteville scored its first run in the top of the first inning.

The Falcons were able to match their first run with freshman Madison Wheat (Cowerta, Okla.) scoring off of an error.

The second inning would be scoreless for both teams.

Platteville secured two runs in the third inning. The Blue and White followed with two runs in the bottom of the third inning with senior Kelsey Bollon (Orangeville, Ill.) scoring junior Taylor Kuske (Kaukauna, Wis.) on a triple and senior Jenna Pozezinski (Lake Villa, Ill.) scoring Bollon on a sacrifice fly.

Platteville scored two more runs in the top of the seventh from an inside-the-park home run. Sophomore Sydney Erdmann (Geneva Ill.) scored for the Falcons in the bottom of the seventh, but wouldn't be enough as the Pioneers would take the first game of the series, 5-4.

Junior Gina Followell (Romeoville, Ill.) had five strikeouts in the start.

The second game of the series would come underway about 20 minutes after the first game ended.

The two teams would score one run in the first inning again, with Erdmann crossing the home plate for the Falcons on a fielder's choice.

Both teams went scoreless until the Falcons were able to put one away in the fifth inning when junior Kristen Fontana (Hickory Hills, Ill.) scored freshman Nicole Grove (Sussex, Wis.) on a single up the middle.

Concordia would bring in two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, scoring freshman Caitlin Huberty (Coleman, Wis.) on a wild pitch and sophomore Claudia Utz (Lockport, Ill.) on a single from junior Alyssa Vilkoski (Greenfield, Wis.).

Going into the seventh, the Pioneers were able to score two more runs, but the Falcons would secure this game in the bag.

Junior Nicki Becker (Brodhead, Wis.) had four strikeouts in the 4-3 victory.

The Falcons will be back home on Wednesday, March 17 as they take on UW-Oshkosh in another doubleheader.
