Steve Anschutz serves as the head coach of both the men’s and women’s tennis programs at Concordia University Wisconsin and has quickly built both teams into perennial contenders.
Anschutz has led the women’s program since the spring of 2012 and took over the men’s team in 2015. Over more than a decade of NACC competition, his programs have combined for an outstanding 168-25 conference record, capturing seven regular-season titles—five on the women’s side and two with the men.
The women’s team has been a dominant force under Anschutz, winning three straight NACC regular-season titles from 2015-16 through 2017-18 and most recently securing back-to-back titles in 2022-23 and 2023-24. The Falcons have also claimed six NACC Tournament championships (2016, 2017, 2018, 2021, 2023, and 2024), earning NCAA Division III Tournament berths in each of those seasons.
The men’s team rose to the top of the NACC standings in 2017 and 2018, winning both the regular season and tournament titles in consecutive years. After sharing the championship in 2017, the Falcons captured the 2018 title outright, capping their tournament run with four straight 5-0 victories. The team finished as conference runner-up in 2019 and has consistently remained a top-tier program in the conference.
In recognition of his success, Anschutz has been named NACC Coach of the Year six times—five times for the women (2016, 2017, 2018, 2022, 2023) and once for the men (2018).
Several student-athletes have earned major conference and national honors during his tenure. Ashley Solberg was named NACC Freshman of the Year in 2015 and NACC Player of the Year in 2017. Ricki Budewitz followed with a remarkable career, earning Freshman of the Year honors in 2018 and Player of the Year accolades in both 2022 and 2023. Budewitz also set CUW and NACC career records for total victories, singles wins, and doubles wins and was named a CSC Academic All-American Second Team selection in 2023. On the men’s side, Landon Sather earned both Freshman and Player of the Year honors during the 2022-23 season and was recognized as a CSC Academic All-American Third Team selection. Most recently, Hayden Latus was named the NACC Freshman of the Year in 2025. Other men’s honorees have included Brad Guendel (2014), Christian Docter (2015), Nolan Rademacher (2018), and Renan Revite (2024), bringing the total number of NACC Freshman of the Year awards to six under Anschutz’s guidance.
Anschutz has coached 39 All-NACC Singles players and 22 All-NACC Doubles teams on the women’s side, and 26 All-NACC Singles players and 18 Doubles teams for the men. Both programs have set single-season win records under his leadership—21 wins for the women (2015-16 and 2023-24) and 20 for the men (2016-17).
A proud CUW alumnus, Anschutz had an outstanding playing career with the Falcons. He helped lead the program to three straight NAC regular-season and tournament titles, finishing with a 67-39 singles record (25-1 NAC) and a 63-44 doubles record (24-3 NAC).
Off the court, Anschutz has been deeply involved in player development. He spent more than three years coaching at the Paley Tennis Center, where he worked with some of Wisconsin’s top junior talent. He also helped launch the Paley Tennis Camp in Fredonia and a youth summer program in Fox Point. At the high school level, Anschutz coached varsity boys’ and girls’ tennis at Nicolet High School—one of the premier programs in the state—where several of his players qualified for the WIAA State Tournament for the first time in their careers.
A lifelong student of the game, Anschutz credits his success to continually learning from fellow coaches, players, and the evolving sport itself. “Our number one goal will always be to grow and achieve both individual and team success,” he says. “The future of CUW Tennis is incredibly bright.”
