Mequon
The outcome was predictable. CUW and Edgewood hammered at each
other for 110 minutes of Fitting Field highlight reel, but a
combination of staunch goal posts and great saves led to a 0-0 tie
in the NAC regular season finale.
Edgewood had an open shot careen off the sidebar in the first
half and CUW smacked a near miss off the top post and straight down
in the second half. Goalies Shane Sullivan of Edgewood and Tom
Anderson of Concordia each had several outstanding saves in the
late going. All of that made for an exciting two hours but a third
conference tie was not good news for Tom Saleska and company.
Although the Falcons had only one loss in 2009 regular season
conference action, they get just a 4th seed in the tournament
because wins count for three points each in NAC soccer and ties for
just one point in the standings. With three ties to go along with
their seven league wins the Falcons tallied 24 points- behind MSOE
and Edgewood. Not surprisingly, CUW played both of those teams to
scoreless ties.
MSOE still has a makeup match remaining with Lakeland but
already has 25 points and owns a head-head win over Edgewood so
they get the #2 seed behind undefeated Nationally-Ranked
Dominican.
Only the top 6 teams make the playoffs with the #1 and #2 seeds
receiving byes. The Falcons (11-3-4 overall) will host Aurora in
the first round of the playoffs on Sunday with the match
tentatively scheduled to start at 1:00pm.
