#4 UW- Stevens Point 78 Concordia 58
The Pointers (26-3) regular season and tournament champions of
the WIAC and ranked 4th Nationally, were just too athletic for CUW
on Saturday in the Championship game of the midwest NCAA Regional.
The Falcons' amazing run through the NAC Tournament and past first
round foe Moorehead ended behind a 54% UW- Stevens Point shooting
barrage on the winners' home turf.
Senior forward Krista Mayyou worked hard for 20 points (on 8 of
15 shooting) plus six rebounds in her CUW career finale, but the
Falcons had no answer for Pointer guard Andrea Flease, an explosive
whirlwind who hit 8 of 9 from the floor and 4-4 from the charity
stripe as she knifed thru the Concordia defense.
CUW came out with a vengeance, opening a 13- 6 lead, but Stevens
Point hit eight of nine shots over a six minute period and appeared
to have assumed control by halftime at 43- 28. Stacey Brunner's
Falcons had one more run, however, cutting the deficit to 48- 40
with 13 minutes left before the victor's speed and physical play
inside eventually wore them down.
Mayyou and fellow seniors Erin Meier and Jenna Ferron (who each
tallied 7 points) were the catalysts to a 4 year Falcon run that
included 3 league championships, two NAC tournament crowns, a pair
of NCAA Tournament invites, and the first NCAA national tournament
win in school history. CUW was an incredible 84- 25 during their
illustrious careers.
