Howards Grove
Concordia trailed Lakeland 40-28 with twelve minutes left in
Tuesday night's game. The Falcons had been outplayed in all
aspects and appeared on their way to a fall from first place in the
NAC courtesy of the second place Muskies.
Enter transfer Abbey Pelkofer who had seen only limited action
since joining the Falcon squad in December. First the 5'10
guard splashed home a 3 from the top of the key to cut the deficit
to 9. Then :45 later she hit another from the same spot to make it
40- 34 and CUW was back in the game.
Bottled up inside and turnover prone from the get go, Stacey
Brunner's team stayed with their new game plan. Tiffany
Hendrickson hit the next "triple" to bring the Falcons within 40-
37 and after the teams traded baskets, CUW's Pearl Wallace hit yet
another 3 to tie the score 42-42.
From that point on it was a dogfight with Melanie Kulibert and
Wallace coming up HUGE down the stretch for Concordia. Kulibert
had eight of the Falcons final 13 points and Wallace scored the
other five.
With the score tied at 54-54 Wallace hit one of two charity
tosses with :04 left and Lakeland was unable to get a good look at
the basket on their final attempt.
Concordia hit an amazing 6 of 7 from beyond the arc to offset a
28 turnover outing. Brunner pointed to 13 of16 free throw shooting
as another key.
Lakeland star KC Blahnik was held to 15 points by a variety of
Falcon defenders. CUW is now 7-1 in the league while Lakeland fell
to 5-2 with the heartbreaking loss.
