Kendall Kerns got the game-winner on CUW's final possession as
the Falcons defeated a talented Edgewood team 60-58 in a
critical NAC battle last evening.
It was a game of "momentum runs" and Stacey Brunner-Jones' team
battled back from adversity on multiple occasions last night.
First, Edgewood roared out to a 12-2 lead in the first three
minutes of the contest and the Eagles still led 31-26 at the
break.
Then after CUW (12-2 in the NAC) had taken their first lead
(35-34) and eventually gone up 40-34 with just 13 minutes left, the
visitors went on a 16-2 tear to build a 50-42 advantage with 7:33
remaining.
Back came Concordia behind senior guard Melanie Kulibert who
scored 7 points during an 11-3 flury that tied the game at 53 with
1:58 left.
During the hectic final minute, CUW's Tiffany Hendrickson hit a
trio of free throws to give her team a 58-55 lead but Alison
Tobin's conventional 3 point play tied it up for Edgewood with :46
left.
Kerns got free to put in the game-winner off a pass from Megan
Bernardoni with :31 left and Bernardoni blocked Edgewood's final
shot attempt to give CUW this crucial win.
Kulibert led the Falcons with 14 points while Hendrickson,
Luethe, and Kerns each scored 11 and Becky Gifford added 9.
Tobin led the Eagles (now 8-3 in the NAC) with 18. Next up is
CIT in Ann Arbor with the Falcons (13-5 overall) battling
Concordia-Ann Arbor Friday in round one.
