MEQUON, Wis. -- The
Concordia University Wisconsin women's basketball team travels to
Marian University for a 7 p.m. matchup Wednesday evening. The
perimeter-oriented Sabres, who dropped an exciting 78-72 decision
to pre-season favorite WLC in their league opener, appear to be one
of the most improved teams in the Northern Athletics
Conference.
MU (3-1, 0-1 NAC) has already
connected on 46 3-pointer in its four games to date. Liz Zutz is
13-for-21 and Sarah Albert 12-for-23 from beyond the arc for the
Fond du Lac, Wis., contingent. Zutz leads the team in scoring with
15.0 points per game, while Alexis Becker (13.5) and Albert (12.8)
are also scoring double-figures for the Sabres. "They are just
excellent shooters from outside," said CUW head coach Stacey
Brunner-Jones.
Brunner-Jones' defensive-minded
Falcons are fresh off a 61-52 win over Edgewood College last
Saturday. CUW has been balanced offensively with junior Tiffany
Hendrickson (Ingleside, Ill.) averaging 12.7 points per game, but
perimeter offense for CUW has been sorely lacking. Hendrickson is
4-for-7 from beyond the arc, but the rest of the Falcons are a
combined 1-of-17 from distance.
CUW post players sophomore Katie
Luethe (Oshkosh, Wis.) and senior Kendall Kerns (Stoughton, Wis.)
are averaging 8.7 and 9.3 points per game, respecitvely. They will
need to assert themselves offensively and on the boards in order
for the Falcons to blunt the Sabres Wednesday night, according to
Brunner-Jones.
"We have shown flashes but need to
put a complete game together," said the veteran Falcon mentor.
