LAS VEGAS - Concordia University
Wisconsin's women's basketball team used an early second half run
to tie the game, but it wasn't enough down the stretch as Eureka
College earned a 63-52 non-conference victory on Tuesday afternoon
at the D3Hoops.com Classic at South Point Arena.
The Falcons (7-4) trailed by as
many as 12 points over the first 23 minutes of the game, before
their defense forced five straight Red Devils (7-1) turnovers. CUW
converted those miscues into an 8-0 run to stay with EC for several
minutes.
Caty Eeten - the nation's leading
scorer - responded and pushed the Red Devils lead back to
double-digits for good. EC scored 34 of its points in the paint and
outscored CUW's bench 13-3.
Sophomore
Katie Luethe (Oshkosh,
Wis.) led the Falcons with 17 points and a game-high-tying 12
rebounds - her second double-double of the season. She also managed
a game-high four steals. Senior
Kendall Kerns (Stoughton, Wis.)
also recorded a double-double, 12 points and 10 rebounds, to go
along with two blocks.
Junior
Brittany Zietlow (Oak
Creek, Wis.) chipped in 14 points and stole three passes for the
Falcons. CUW, however, couldn't find a rhythm offensively as the
Falcons were successful on a paltry 26.1 percent of their field
goal attempts. The Falcons also shot just 3-of-16 from outside the
3-point arc.
"We didn't shoot well today," head
coach
Stacey Brunner-Jones said. "We had too many turnovers in
critical portions of the game. I like the way we responded in the
second half to tie the game, but we didn't play smart from then
on."
Eeten scored a game-high 30 points
on 11-of-20 shooting and 8-of-10 at the free throw line.
Khassandrae Brown added 10 points and six rebounds for the Red
Devils. Jay Stewart hauled in a game-high-tying 12 rebounds, to go
along with six points and three assists.
Eureka's high-scoring offense used
a 13-4 scoring run to take a 10 point, 17-7, advantage with 12:06
remaining in the first half.
The Falcons twice got to within
seven points, on a Kerns 3-pointer and Luethe layup, before the Red
Devils took a 33-25 lead at halftime.
Eeten scored 15 points for EC,
while Luethe recorded 11 points for CUW in the opening 20 minutes.
The Red Devils shot 50 percent and forced the Falcons into 10
turnovers.
EC's lead blossomed to 12 points
several times in the final minutes of the game, as CUW was
outscored 26-15 over the final 14:10.
CUW plays No. 1-ranked Amherst
College (8-0) and NCAA Division III defending national champions on
Wednesday at 1 p.m. (CST) before heading home for the New
Year.
