Milwaukee -
Up 29-27 at the break, the Concordia women's basketball team
shot just 9-for-32 from the field over the final 20 minutes,
enabling Wisconsin Lutheran to take control and pull away, as the
Warriors won the NAC Tournament Championship 76-67 on Saturday
afternoon.
Erika Laete continued her recent string of scoring dominance,
finishing with a game-high 26-points while bringing down nine
rebounds for the Warriors. In total, Wisconsin Lutheran saw four
players finish in double-figures, with Shavon Dillon recording 14
points, Rachel Johnson tallying 12 points (and 10 rebounds) and
Krissy Day adding 10 points on 3-for-4 shooting.
The Falcons, who led for the majority of the first half,
received a 23-point, nine rebound performance from Kendall Kerns,
while Katie Luethe and Becky Gifford each added 12 and 10 points
respectively.
With a record of 19-9, the CUW women's basketball season comes
to a close - yet with a very bright future. Coming into the 2010-11
season, it was no secret just how young the Falcons were. As the
season wore on, Concordia gained valuable experience and got better
and better. At one point, Head Coach Stacey Brunner-Jones's team
won seven straight contests and found themselves competing for the
conference title in the final weeks of the regular-season.
Saturday's loss also marked the end of Mel Kulibert's excellent
collegiate basketball career.
Wisconsin Lutheran (25-3) advances to the NCAA Tournament for
the third time in program history.
