MEQUON, Wis. - The
Concordia University Wisconsin men's soccer team was in control for
most of the contest on Sunday afternoon before UW-Superior put
together a late rally with a pair of goals during a two minute span
in regulation to tie the match. The Yellow Jackets found the back
of the net with 16 seconds remaining in overtime to win the
non-conference matchup, 3-2, at Fitting Field.
CUW (1-2-0) outshot UW-Superior
(2-0-0) and led for 83 minutes, but it was Eric Nilsen who was the
deciding factor scoring the final goal in regulation and
game-winner.
Sophomore Alberto Valle
(Milwaukee, Wis.) put the Falcons ahead early with a goal at 8:03
with assists from junior Kyle Sytsma (Antioch, Ill.) and junior
Zach Lemler (West Bend, Wis.).
CUW controlled the pace of action
despite UW-Superior's physical play and 18-5 foul count.
Lemler pushed the Falcons
advantage to 2-0 with a header goal off a corner kick by senior
Victor Mendoza (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) at 58:35.
UW-Superior turned on its offense
at the end of regulation with goals by Dan Warnke and Nilsen less
than two minutes apart to knot the match at 2-2 with 6:45
remaining.
In overtime, both teams scrambled
to score against the clock, but it was Nilsen who dribbled through
several defenders and scored the game winner.
CUW returns to action on
Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. when it travels to Beloit College for a
non-conference matchup.
