MILWAUKEE - Concordia University Wisconsin
cut a double-digit deficit in the second half to four points, but
Wisconsin Lutheran College had a pair of 20-point scorers to earn a
70-60 Northern Athletics Conference women's basketball victory on
Tuesday night inside the Recreation Complex.
CUW went on a 13-4 run during a five minute stretch
midway through the second half, but WLC responded with Rachel
Johnson and Shavon Dillon who scored a combined 21 points in the
game's final 20 minutes. The Warriors went to the paint throughout
the game for scoring and finished with a 20-8 advantage.
The Falcons (8-6, 8-2 NAC) shot 53.6 percent from the
field in the second period and had four starters score in
double-figures, but their 19 turnovers proved to be too much.
Junior Brittany Zietlow (Oak Creek, Wis.) led CUW with
15 points, while sophomore Katie Luethe (Oshkosh, Wis.) finished
with 12 points. Each player grabbed a team-high-tying six rebounds.
Junior Tiffany Hendrickson (Ingleside, Ill.) and junior Camille
Parsons (Urbana, Ill.) concluded the contest with 11 and 10 points,
respectively. Parsons' 10 points was a season-high for the 5-foot-9
guard.
Johnson led all players with 22 points, nine rebounds,
four blocks and three steals. Dillon finished with 21 points off
the bench for WLC (9-3, 6-0 NAC). She also stole a game-high eight
passes, to go along with three rebounds and three assists.
Kristen Schulz and Krissy Day scored 10 and nine
points, respectively, in the win for the Warriors.
After the Falcons cut the game to four points with
8:52 remaining in the game, the Warriors answered with their own
scoring run to push the game back to double-digits for the final
3:41 of the contest.
CUW wasn't able to gain on WLC despite shooting 53.6
in the second half, its third highest second half field goal
percentage of the season and highest since a Dec. 10 home victory
over Aurora University.
The opening half was a back-and-forth contest for the
first eight-plus minutes before WLC went on an 18-4 run to take a
35-21 lead at the intermission. CUW went cold from the field and
finished 27.6 percent from the field during the first 20
minutes.
The Warriors held a 12-2 advantage in paint scoring
and a 13-4 lead in bench scoring over the Falcons in the first
half. CUW also committed 12 turnovers to the WLC's six. Dillon led
all players with 13 first period points.
CUW returns to the court on Saturday against NAC South
Division leader MSOE (9-4, 6-1 NAC) at 2 p.m. inside the R. John
Buuck Field House. The game is the first part of a doubleheader
with the men's program.
