MEQUON, Wis. – Both Concordia University Wisconsin and Wisconsin Lutheran College entered Tuesday's Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Men's Soccer match needing a win. The Falcons came in with a 3-4-0 league record, in a three-way tie for fifth place. WLC came in with a 2-4-0 record and were three points out of the final spot for the upcoming NACC Tournament.
The Falcons and Warriors both ended up getting a point in the standings as the two played to a 1-1 draw, further complicating the postseason picture. Both teams are well alive in the standings as the Falcons have two conference matches remaining.
Senior Diego Campos (Milwaukee, Wis.) helped deliver the Falcons the tie as he scored a penalty kick in the 66th minute to knot the score at 1-1. His goal came just 3:03 after Wisconsin Lutheran took a 1-0 advantage on a goal by Isaiah Gronholz. Gronholz scored on a breakaway after a pass from Austin Drake.
The rest of the match saw a few scoring chances and a lot of physical play. The two teams were whistled for 39 penalties and seven cards. The Falcons were whistled five times for a card, all five being yellows, but the last yellow was the second of the game for Campos, resulting in a red. CUW played the final 15:12 a man down, but held strong to pick up the tie.
Senior Eric Vogel (Itasca, Ill.) made six saves, including stopping two shots in each overtime period. On the other side of the pitch was Cedric Guichard who tallied five saves for the Warriors, two in the first half and three in the second.
Junior Keegan Van Dusseldorp (Burlington, Wis.) returned to the Falcons lineup after missing two matches and led the team once again with eight shots. Freshman Jake Swihart (Oostburg, Wis.) and Campos each tallied four for the Falcons, while WLC received a team-high five shots from the foot of Drake.
CUW (5-10-2, 3-4-1 NACC) will have a couple big NACC matches to close the season, beginning with its home-finale Saturday against Concordia University Chicago. The Falcons and Cougars set for a 3:30 p.m. start which will be Senior Day at Fitting Field.
