MEQUON, Wis. – Sophomore Bridget Slater stopped all 17 shots she faced as she helped lead the Concordia University Wisconsin Women's Hockey team to a 2-0 win over Finlandia University Saturday at the Ozaukee Ice Center. The Falcons scored both goals in the third period to complete the weekend sweep of the Lions.
Sophomore Veronika Metanova (Palatine, Ill.) broke a scoreless tie 2:13 into the third period when she scored a power play goal. Metanova's score was assisted by senior Emily Heckendorf (Merrill, Wis.) and junior Alexis Machuga (Rochester Hills, Mich.). The power play goal was also big for the Falcons as it broke a 0-for-9 stretch with an extra skater to start the season. CUW finished the game 1-for-5 with the advantage.
Sophomore Brandi Muller (Anchorage, Alaska) provided some insurance for the Falcons 7:09 into the final period. Muller was able to beat the Lions goaltender off an assist from junior Katherine Pauletti (Roseville, Minn.) to give CUW a 2-0 lead.
The second goal was nice for CUW, but wasn't needed as nothing was getting by Slater. She recorded eight saves in both the first and third periods, while adding one in the second period to pick up the shutout. Taylor Gustafson also played well between the pipes for the Lions, stopping 39 shots as CUW held a 41-17 edge in shots for the game.
After a close first period in terms of shots (9-8 CUW) the Falcons took control of the game the rest of the way. They posted a 16-1 edge in the second stanza and fired 16 more shots compared to eight for the Lions in the third. CUW was able to take advantage of a diminished Finlandia team, one that suited up just 11 skaters Saturday.
The Falcons move to 2-0-0 with the win and will look to continue its strong start next weekend in a non-conference series at Augsburg. The first matchup is set for Friday night at 7 p.m.
