Men's Soccer shut out by North Park in non-conference action

MEQUON, Wis. – After 45 minutes of play in Sunday's non-conference match between North Park University and the Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Soccer team, it appeared the two teams were headed for a scoreless draw for a second straight season. Unfortunately for CUW, the Vikings found its offensive game in the second half, securing a 2-0 win at Fitting Field.

Last season NPU and CUW played to a scoreless draw on September 10. With both goalkeepers, senior Eric Vogel (Itasca, Ill.) and Wesley Woodley back in the fold this fall, it appeared the two teams were headed in that direction again.

NPU (4-0-0) had other ideas, scoring twice in the second half for the two-goal win. Fredrik Greiff scored the first goal of the contest, putting the Vikings on the board at the 61:55 mark off an assist from Pedram Tahmi-Masoleh. Greiff sent one from about 25 yards and the ball just slipped through the hands of Vogel to give NPU a 1-0 lead.

A little under 13 minutes later Greiff returned to favor by setting Tahmi-Masoleh up for a goal and putting the match out of reach for the Falcons. Greiff sent a pass towards the goal and Tahmi-Masoleh out battled the CUW defender before finding the back of the net.

The Falcons had a few chances on Sunday, finishing the match with nine shots, three of those coming on goal. Junior Bobby Russ (Wauwatosa, Wis.) led CUW with three shots, while Tahmi-Masolah and Markus Fodstad led all players with seven.

Vogel finished the match with four saves as he played well for much of the 90-minute session. Woodley posted his second straight shutout against the Falcons, making three saves. The two teams played a very physical style of soccer, combining for 45 fouls and four yellow cards.

CUW (1-4-0) will be off until next Saturday when they head to face Monmouth College in non-conference action. The match is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.
