Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

St. Catherine scores late in third period, downs Women's Hockey 2-1

MEQUON, Wis. – Jordan Solheim of St. Catherine University scored with 4:38 remaining to lift her Wildcats to a 2-1 non-conference win over the Concordia University Wisconsin Women's Hockey team Saturday afternoon at the Ozaukee Ice Center.

The Falcons would have preferred to not see Solheim this weekend as she proved to be the SCU player that gave CUW fits. Solheim scored all three Wildcats goals over the two games, including both in Saturday's win, allowing the two teams to split the weekend series.

The game-winning goal broke a 1-1 tie, which lasted for nearly two whole periods as the teams played another strong defensive game Saturday. Each team got on the board in the opening period, SCU building a 1-0 lead 6:13 into play when Solheim netted a power play goal off an assist from Mallory Ryan.

CUW (7-6-1) would tie the game later in the first stanza as sophomore Baylee Darling (Holmen, Wis.) scored with 4:15 to go before the first intermission. Senior Sammi Reiter (Stillwater, Minn.) and freshman Lexi Holman (Cold Spring, Minn.) assisted on Darling's second goal of the season.

From that point on the goaltenders and defense took over as senior Andrea Mizanskey (Palos Heights, Ill.) and the Wildcats Kristen Pechacek were locked in a battle. Mizanskey finished the game with 32 saves, including stopping all 15 shots she faced in the second period. She added nine saves in the third and final period. Pechacek played her best hockey over the final 20 minutes, stopping all 15 shots she faced and finishing the game with 37 saves.

The Falcons were once again held scoreless on the power play, failing to score on four chances. St. Catherine picked up one score with the advantage as they also had four tries. Both teams were whistled for eight penalty minutes Saturday.

CUW will return to the ice next weekend in hosting Adrian College in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association series. The Falcons and Bulldogs will face off Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Ozaukee Ice Center.
