Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Diaz's goal lifts Men's Soccer to 10th win of season

MADISON – The 2014 Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Soccer season certainly proved to be an outlier. After 20 straight double-digit win seasons under head coach Tom Saleska, the Falcons failed to reach that total last season, thanks in large part to several heartbreaking defeats. CUW is back in familiar territory in 2015, posting their 10th win (in just 13 matches so far) with a 1-0 victory over Edgewood Saturday

THE BASICS

- Final Score: Concordia Wisconsin 1, Edgewood 0
- Location: Breese Stevens Field – Madison, Wis.
- Records: Concordia Wisconsin – 10-2-1, 4-1-0 NACC; Edgewood – 5-8-0, 2-5-0 NACC

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Falcons and Eagles were scoreless after 45 minutes of play, despite CUW owning a 12-3 edge in shots in the opening half. Just two of those shots were on goal, as both senior Alec Brew (Appleton, Wis.) and Edgewood keeper Kyle Wood made two first-half saves.

- In the second half, freshman Dagoberto Diaz (Woodburn, Ore.) got the Falcons on the board in the 64th minute. He blasted one in from 25 yards for his fifth goal of the season, which was also his third game-winning score.

- Brew and the Falcons defense proved to just need one goal once again on Saturday, as the 1-0 victory was the second straight for CUW. Brew would finish the contest with three saves.

- CUW held a 28-8 advantage in shots, including a 10-3 edge in shots on goal. The Falcons also had 10 corner kicks compared to just two for the Eagles, showcasing a dominance of possession throughout.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

- Brew continues his impressive senior season with his fifth shutout in 11 starts. The Falcons keeper now owns a .882 save percentage, as well as 0.59 goals against average.

- Diaz has been tremendous in his freshman season with the Falcons, providing a goal-scoring spark to the attack. His last three goals have been game-winning scores, all coming in the second half or later (one in overtime). The Falcons are 5-0-0 in contests which Diaz has scored in.

- As a team CUW has six shutouts this season. CUW has recorded 10 or more shutouts four times since the 2006 season, something this year's squad could certainly accomplish.

- The Falcons are ranked eighth in the latest NSCAA Central Region poll. With a pair of wins this past week, CUW would once again move up in the regional rankings.

UP NEXT

- The Falcons will begin a three-match homestand Wednesday against Rockford. Kickoff from Fitting Field is set for a 4 p.m. start.
