Women's Hockey suffers overtime setback at Saint Benedict

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Women's Hockey team suffered its first non-conference setback of the 2015-16 season Saturday, falling in overtime at The College of Saint Benedict. The Falcons scored with 46 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 2-2, but the Blazers struck 2:49 into overtime, handing the Falcons the 3-2 loss.

THE BASICS
- Final Score: St. Benedict 3, Concordia Wisconsin 2
- Location: Dave Torrey Arena – St. Cloud, Minn.
- Records: Concordia Wisconsin 4-7-1, St. Benedict 3-6-1

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Falcons rallied to tie the game at 2-2 after pulling the goalie with 1:13 to play in regulation. CUW recorded the extra-attacker score 27 seconds later as senior Lexi Machuga (Rochester Hills, Mich.) tallied the equalizer. Sophomore Lexi Holman (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) and junior Veronika Metanova assisted on the score.

- The Blazers had the final answer, however, scoring 2:49 into overtime for the one-goal win. Allison Kirk netted the game-winner for St. Benedict, with Elli Marvin gaining the assist.

- The Falcons struck first on Saturday as Metanova (Palatine, Ill.), who scored the game-winner in Friday night's 3-2 win, scored just 2:42 into play for the 1-0 lead. Metanova's goal, her third of the season, was unassisted.

- St. Benedict would respond with the next two goals, the first of those coming 3:51 into the second stanza off the stick of Kacee Medved. The Blazers then took the lead 2-1 late in the third period, scoring with 2:15 remaining, but the Falcons answered with the final minute goal, forcing overtime.

- Sophomore Allison Kurek (Chicago, Ill.) finished with 17 saves for the Falcons. Her counterpart, Angel Hillstrom, made 26 saves to pick up the win for the Blazers.

- The Falcons normally strong power play unit couldn't take advantage of four opportunities on Saturday. The Blazers on the other hand converted their only power play chance in the game.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- CUW heads into the New Year with a 4-7-1 record. Last season the Falcons were 5-4-1 before the break.

- The Falcons dropped to 2-1-1 in non-conference games this season, all of those coming against MIAC opponents. The first two games after the break will also be against MIAC opposition as CUW hosts Bethel in a two-game set.

UP NEXT
- The Falcons will wait until 2016 to play again when they host Bethel in a two-game series at the Ozaukee Ice Center. The first game of the series is set for January 8 at 7 p.m.
