Metanova's late goal gains Women's Hockey a 4-4 tie with Marian

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – Sophomore Veronika Metanova scored a goal with 31 seconds left in regulation, allowing the Concordia University Wisconsin Women's Hockey team to tie Marian University 4-4 in NCHA play Saturday. The Falcons trailed 4-2 at one point in the third before scoring two late goals to tie the game.

Metanova's goal was assisted by junior Alexis Machuga (Rochester Hills, Mich.) and senior Elizabeth Otto (Stillwater, Minn.). Metanova also assisted on the Falcons third goal of the game, scored by senior Emily Heckendorf (Merrill, Wis.), which made the score 4-3 in favor of Marian with 9:05 remaining in regulation.

Metanova (Palatine, Ill.) finished the game with three points, as she also scored 7:39 into the third period on a goal assisted by Heckendorf and Otto. Both Heckendorf and Otto tallied two points in the game.

The third period saw most of the scoring with five goals combined between the two teams. Marian entered the third up 2-1 before scoring 3:44 into play, making the score 3-1. Metanova trimmed the margin to one, but Marian answered to go up 4-2 at the 10:18 mark of the third.

The Falcons built a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play thanks to a goal by freshman Lexi Holman (Cold Spring, Minn.). Holman's second goal in as many days was assisted by junior Hannah Zobel and senior Sammi Reiter (Stillwater, Minn.).

The second period was all Sabres as Nina Laurie (shorthanded) and Amanda Waigand gave MU a 2-1 lead on unassisted goals. Sara Bier had both of the Sabres goals in the third period, Waigand picking up one of the assists on the first goal of the final stanza.

Senior Andrea Mizanskey (Palos Heights, Ill.) made 25 saves for the Falcons, including stopping nine shots in the overtime session. CUW was outshot 29-25 on Saturday.

The Falcons will return to the ice next weekend when they visit Lake Forest Friday night for an NCHA tilt. The Falcons and Foresters, who split two games earlier this season, will face off at 7 p.m.
