Men's Lacrosse drops season opener against John Carroll

MEQUON, Wis. – A pair of late goals allowed John Carroll University to earn a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Concordia University Wisconsin in non-conference action on a cold Sunday afternoon at Fitting.

Both teams went back-and-forth all game, but a late goal by the Blue Streaks with 3:28 to play was enough. The visitors were then able to run off over a minute at the end of the game, but the Falcons caused a turnover and got a late shot that went wide of the net with less than 10 seconds to play.

CUW's defense played well all game and held JCU to 0-of-7 on man-up chances, while causing seven turnovers. Statistics were even across the stat sheet, with a slight advance to the Blue Streaks who won 6-of-9 faceoffs. The Falcons didn't help themselves with eight penalties for six minutes, including three in the fourth quarter totaling 2:30.

Senior Shawn Teixeira (Calgary, Alberta) led the Falcons with a career-high two goals, including a man-up score with 14:09 to play in the game. Senior David Mueller (Prior Lake, Minn.) assisted on Teixeira's marker. Sophomore Colin Raley (Inverness, Ill.) had CUW's first goal of the game with 3:33 to play before halftime.

Junior Matt Garvey (Winnipeg, Manitoba) assisted on the first two Falcon goals and sophomore Mark Wilson (Calgary, Alberta) led the team with three ground balls. Senior Matt Larsen (Gurnee, Ill.), Wilson and senior Christopher Grenz (Centennial, Colo.) each had two caused turnovers.

In all, four different Blue Streaks found the back of the net and Declan O'Grady had the visitors only assist. Gary Anile led all players with four ground balls, and Jack MacLean and Tommy Adolf each had two caused turnovers.

The Falcons went ahead 2-1 with over eight minutes to play in the third period, but JCU answered one minute and 32 seconds later. CUW again went ahead after Teixeira's man-up tally with just over 14 minutes to play in the game, but the Blue Streak knotted the scoreboard 20 seconds later. The game-winning goal with 3:28 to play was scored by Logan Calhoun.

The temperature at the start of the game was 11 degrees, making it the coldest game in program history.

CUW returns to the field on Saturday for a 1 pm non-conference game against Olivet College.
