LEXINGTON, Ky. – Shawn Teixeira scored the game-winner with two minutes to play and Marino Best recorded four goals to lead Concordia University Wisconsin to a 7-6 non-conference victory over Transylvania University on Thursday afternoon.
The Falcons outscored the Pioneers four goals to one in the second half, but it was Teixeira's marker, the only man-up goal of the game, that was the difference. CUW earned the man-advantage opportunity after Transylvania was whistled for a tripping violation with 2:29 to play in the game.
There were three scoring ties and four lead changes in the contest, and in the end the Falcons held a slim 21-19 shots on goal lead. They also won 8-of-15 faceoffs and cleared 15-of-20 attempts, while the Pioneers cleared 17-of-18 chances.
Best (junior, Nanaimo, British Columbia) opened the game with back-to-back goals during a one minute and five second span late in the first quarter. The Pioneers responded with four-consecutive goals, including three by Clark Watts, to lead 4-2 with six minutes before halftime.
Best added another goal prior to Zack Riggs giving Transylvania a two-goal lead, 5-3, at the intermission. The combination of Best and Teixeira (Calgary, Alberta) added consecutive goals in the third period to knot the game at 5-5. Brendan Thompson found the back of the net for the Pioneers with 24 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Senior David Mueller (Prior Lake, Minn.) netted his fourth goal of the season, an unassisted score, with 3:29 to play in the game. Teixeira's game-winner gave him a career-high-tying two goals, which was assisted by senior Derek Brueske (Hopkins, Minn.). The Falcons have won three of their past four games, all on the road.
Junior Thomas Mueller (Prior Lake, Minn.) made 13 saves in a winning effort in goal, including six stops in the fourth quarter. His counterpart, Cooper Fogle, also made 13 saves in net.
CUW returns home for three-straight at Fitting Field, beginning with its Midwest Lacrosse Conference opener at 4 pm against Beloit College on Thursday.
