MILWAUKEE – Concordia University Wisconsin's offense was too powerful on Thursday night during an overwhelming 14-5 victory over MSOE during Midwest Lacrosse Conference play. The Falcons scored six unanswered goals before halftime to put the game out of reach for the Raiders.
CUW began the game with a trio of goals during the first five-plus minutes before MSOE found the back of the net. The Falcons then took over the game by scoring six unanswered goals to push their advantage to 9-1 at the intermission and take all momentum to be had in the league matchup.
The Raiders would score four goals in the second half, but the Falcons had a response each team, including a man-up marker in each of the third and fourth quarters. CUW finished with a commanding 39-19 shots advantage (26-12 on goal) and won 17-of-23 faceoffs. Both teams would cause 10 turnovers.
Numerous Falcons had career games, including sophomore Colin Raley (Inverness, Ill.) who ended with a career-high seven points, which included six goals (two shy of tying the program record). The attacker had five of his six goals in the first half and recorded an assist to begin the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, junior Matt Garvey (Winnipeg, Manitoba) accumulated a career-high six points, including three goals all in the first half. The team leader in assists added three more in the convincing victory, two of which went to Raley. As well, freshman Nicholas Nayersina (Grayslake, Ill.) tallied a career-high two goals that both occurred in the second half.
Just two of CUW's 14 goals were unassisted, and seniors Shawn Teixeira (Calgary, Alberta) and David Mueller (Prior Lake, Minn.) found their teammates often throughout the contest. Teixeira recorded a career-high-tying four assists, while Mueller dished out a career-best three helpers.
Defensively, junior Mark Wilson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) led the efforts in the field with a career-high five caused turnovers, while junior Thomas Mueller (Prior Lake, Minn.) made four saves in net. Freshman Jacob Murnane (Milwaukee, Wis.) also played nearly 17 minutes and made three saves. Junior Danny Bundra (Lake Zurich, Ill.) controlled the faceoff circle by winning 15-of-19 attempts and picking up 10 ground balls.
Thomas Reid paced the MSOE (4-7, 1-3 MLC) with two goals, while three of his teammates each found the back of the net once. Maxwell Wasscher caused a game-high-tying five turnovers, and Pat Collins and Sam Kpecky each made six saves between the pipes.
CUW returns to the field on Saturday for a 1 pm MLC game against Fontbonne University. The Falcons will also honor their seniors prior to the game.
