Moehn's overtime goal lifts Men's Soccer over No. 5 UW-Whitewater

WHITEWATER, Wis. – Over the past few seasons the Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Soccer team has seen its fair share of tough setbacks in overtime matches. On Wednesday the Falcons fortunes were reversed as Jordan Moehn scored 52 seconds into overtime lifting CUW to a 2-1 win over No. 5 UW-Whitewater. The Falcons win dealt the Warhawks their first loss of the 2015 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Falcons jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute of the match when freshman Gavin Falotico (Palatine, Ill.) scored his first career collegiate goal. Sophomore Luis Loya (Bolingbrook, Ill.) assisted on the opening score.

- The Warhawks made the score 1-1 in the 21st minute. Alex Whiteman had the goal for the fifth-ranked Warhawks, while Derick Achombom had the assist.

- The rest of regulation was scoreless as neither team had many opportunities. The two teams combined for 10 shots on goal, with the Falcons getting four of those.

- Moehn (Fond du Lac, Wis.) had his third goal in as many matches just 92 seconds into the overtime session. He scored off an assist from sophomore Jake Swihart (Oostburg, Wis.).

- Sophomore Killian Mielotz (Grafton, Wis.) picked up his first career win. Mielotz came on late in the first half and made one save in 48-plus minutes of action.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

- The Falcons got their first win in an overtime match since the 2009 season. CUW was 0-14-12 in its last 26 matches and 0-1-1 in previous overtime matches this season.

- CUW is now 1-0-1 in its last two matches against the Warhawks. Last season CUW and UW-Whitewater played to a 1-1 draw in a match at Fitting Field on October 1, 2014.

- The Falcons climbed into the regional rankings this week, receiving votes in the Central Region. The Warhawks entered as the top ranked team in the North Region. The Falcons will have another chance to impress voters this week with a matchup against MSOE Saturday. The Raiders are currently the fifth ranked team in the Central Region.

- In three matchups since the 2003 season, the Falcons have yet to lose to the Warhawks. CUW and UW-Whitewater played to ties in the 2003 season, as well as the 1-1 draw last year.

UP NEXT

- The Falcons will visit MSOE in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup on Saturday. The match between CUW and the Raiders is set for a 1 p.m. start.
