MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Women's Hockey team battled hard with the No. 3 ranked team in the country Friday night. Unfortunately the Falcons would come up just short, falling against Adrian College by a 4-3 score in NCHA action.
THE BASICS
- Final Score: No. 3 Adrian 4, Concordia Wisconsin 3
- Location: Ozaukee Ice Center – Mequon, Wis.
- Records: Adrian 12-2-0, 8-1-0 NCHA; Concordia Wisconsin 4-10-1, 2-6-0 NCHA
HOW IT HAPPENED
- All the scoring was done in the first two periods as Adrian built a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes of play, but the Falcons rallied to make the score 4-3 before 40 minutes was up. In the third period, freshman goaltender Christina Pattengale (Portage, Mich.) did a tremendous job of keeping the deficit at one as she stopped all 15 shots she faced in the final stanza. Pattengale finished the game with 38 saves.
- A first period hat trick from the Bulldogs' Brooke Lupi put the Falcons in a 3-1 hole after one period of play. CUW got on the board first, however, thanks to a score 5:49 into play from senior Chelsea Regan (Oakdale, Minn.).
- The Falcons battled back in the second period, starting with a 5-on-3 power play goal from junior Veronika Metanova (Palatine, Ill.). Metanova scored on a rebound off a shot from freshman Ellie Woodman (Janesville, Wis.) as Woodman was credited with an assist on the play which made the score 3-2.
- Adrian would extend its lead to 4-2 on a goal from Kaylyn Schroka 10:01 into the second period. The score came just as a CUW penalty was ending, so the Bulldogs were still working with an advantage despite the power play time just ending.
- The Falcons again made it a one-goal game when sophomore Lexi Holman (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) scored her fifth goal of the season. Holman's score was assisted by Metanova and senior Lexi Machuga (Rochester Hills, Mich.).
- Brooke Gibson got the win for the Bulldogs in relief of starter Jade Walsh. Gibson played the final 34-plus minutes and made 12 saves for her eighth win of the season.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Pattengale's two highest save games this season have come against Adrian. She posted a career-best 50 saves in a 4-2 setback at then No. 2 Adrian on November 8.
- Holman and Metanova each recorded their fifth goals of the season on Friday, which is tied for second on the team. Machuga also has five goals as the trio have been a fairly productive line this season. Holman also leads the team with 11 assists, Machuga just behind with eight.
UP NEXT
- These two teams will get together again tomorrow at the Ozaukee Ice Center, this time with a 3 p.m. start.
