Fauchoux delivers shorthanded game-winner in Men's Hockey season opener

MEQUON, Wis. – Just over a minute into the third period on Friday, UW-River Falls scored to take a 3-1 lead over the Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Hockey team. The rest of the game was all CUW, which resulted in three unanswered goals, including the game-winning shorthanded score by Adam Fauchoux with 1:58 left for a 4-3 season-opening win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Falcons saved their best period for the final one, scoring three times after the early third-period score by UW-River Falls. After the UW-River Falls score 1:35 into the final stanza, CUW responded 19 seconds later on a Josh Adkins (Victoria, British Columbia) score. Dante Hahn (Victoria, British Columbia) and Jared Pilet (Seattle, Wash.) assisted on the Adkins score.

- Eric Therrien (Willow Bunch, Saskatchewan) produced a wrap-around goal midway through the final stanza to tie the game, setting the stage for Fauchoux's heroics. The Falcons were whistled for a penalty at the 16:56 mark of the third, appearing to give UW-River Falls some momentum. Fauchoux (Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) was able to get a breakaway and buried his opportunity, lighting the lamp for the 4-3 win.

- UW-River Falls had two separate two-goal leads in the game as it scored the first two goals of the contest as well. Eddie Matshushima scored the only goal of the first period, while Joe Drapluk put UW-River Falls up 2-0 5:22 into the second.

- Freshman Brett Garvey (Ashton, Ontario) produced the first goal of the season for CUW, also the Falcons only power play goal in the contest. Mac Ferner (Vernon, British Columbia) and Adkins assisted on the Garvey score.

- Nick Malvin (Ham Lake, Minn.) got the win for the Falcons, stopping 20 shots. Malvin made eight saves in the third period, including a few down the stretch after the Fauchoux go-ahead score. Zach Quinn made 30 saves for UW-River Falls.

- Both teams were 1-for-6 on the power play on Friday. CUW was whistled nine times for 21 minutes in the box, while UW-River Falls spent 16 minutes in the box on eight infractions.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The season-opening win was the second in the 11-year history of the CUW Men's Hockey program. The only other time CUW started 1-0 was during the 2013-14 campaign, a 6-2 win at Lawrence.

- The Falcons will host UW-Superior for a non-conference game tomorrow at 4 p.m.
