Late Goal Lifts Marquette Past Falcons

MEQUON, Wis. – The CUW ACHA hockey team welcomed the Marquette Golden Eagles in a rematch of Friday night's away contest.

The matchup started off with a pair of Falcon penalties that resulted in a five-on-three advantage for the Golden Eagles.  Marquette was able to capitalize off that in the fourth minute on a power-play goal.

That was the only action in the first period with a score of 1-0 in favor of the Golden Eagles going into the first intermission.

Marquette wasted no time and the Golden Eagles took the 2-0 lead 39 seconds into the second period.

The Falcons answered back in the second minute with a long-range snipe from freshman Garrett Wilderman (Waukesha, Wis.).  He was assisted by junior Trenton Sherman (Farmington, Minn.).

The Golden Eagles took back the two-goal lead in the 12th minute of the second period.

Sherman brought the game back to within one with a rebound putback off a Falcon shot.  He was assisted by junior Scott Gregor (Ashland, Wis.) and senior Wyatt Wilderman (Bear Dance, Mont.).

The Falcons tied it up just over one minute later on the power play with a goal off the stick of sophomore John Swiatek (Rochester, N.Y.).  Swiatek was assisted by junior Easton Williams (Racine, Wis.) as well as Wyatt Wilderman once again.

The scoring did not stop there. The Falcons netted another goal under 30 seconds later to take the 4-3 lead.  After his assist just seconds earlier, Easton Williams snaked one into the back of the net with a helper from junior Connor Doyle (Naples, Fla.).

The Golden Eagles tied it up going into the second intermission with a goal in the 19th minute.  The second period saw seven total goals with four coming from the Falcons and three from the Golden Eagles.

It didn't take long for the Golden Eagles to take the 5-4 lead after a far post goal on a power-play inside the first minute for the third period.

The Falcons brought the game back to even at five with a goal in the 10th minute of the third period.  Garrett Wilderman netted another long snipe goal on the power play with assists from his brother Wyatt Wilderman as well as Scott Gregor.

The Golden Eagles snuck one in the back of the net with 1:10 left in the game to take the 6-5 lead.

The Falcons turn their attention toward Aurora on Feb. 4 for another home and home contest.
