MEQUON, Wis. – The CUW women's volleyball team kept the winning streak alive on Tuesday night with a 3-0 victory over Wisconsin Lutheran. The Falcons soar to 16-6 on the year and to 10-0 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) with the 25-18, 25-12, 25-16 victory.
The Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 lead to start the first set, but it was all Falcons after that. A kill from senior Sophia Collins (Lake Mills, Wis.) gave the Falcons an 8-4 lead. The Warriors trimmed the lead to a point on three occasions but were never able to overtake the Blue and White. A 12-6 runner ended the set with the Falcons winning, 25-18.
The serve of Jenna Chaussee (Chilton, Wis.) put the Warriors in a big hole early in set two, as CUW took an early 8-1 lead. CUW never let the Warriors get closer than six points and freshman Mickenzi Benter (Appleton, Wis.) closed the set at 25-12 with a kill off a touch from Sophia Collins. Junior Maycee Karpfinger (Wauwatosa, Wis.) hit 0.800 in the set with four kills.
The Falcons broke through again in the third set tied at seven. The serve of freshman Abby Proefrock (Grafton, Wis.) pushed the lead to 12-7. Mickenzi Benter had two kills to end the run. WLC cut the Falcons' lead to 14-10, but that would be the closest the Warriors got the rest of the night. A kill from junior Maycee Karpfinger (Wauwatosa, Wis.) gave the Falcons the set at 25-16.
Maycee Karpfinger led the match with nine kills and added two service aces in the victory.
Jenna Chaussee dug up 11 balls and led all players with three service aces.
Senior Sierra Lee (Kenosha, Wis.) fed the CUW attack with a match-high 14 assists, with senior Erika Natzke (Morton Grove, Ill.) adding 11.
The NACC race continues to heat up as we approach the finish line. The Falcons have three NACC matches remaining with a match at Illinois Tech and home matches against St. Nobert and Lakeland. CUW is currently in first place at 10-0, with Aurora in second place at 9-1. Edgewood defeated St. Norbert on Tuesday night to move into a tie with the Green Knights at 8-2.
Tonight's victory secures a spot for the Falcons in the NACC Tournament.
The Falcons return to action on Friday at Illinois Tech.
